An unforgettable learning experience on board the Prince Willem Alexander ship

By Robine Leemburg – Nurse Trainee Level 4

Last week I was allowed to go on a special trip with Stichting Heinz Bijzondere Vakantiereizen . We made a river cruise on the Rhine aboard the Prins Willem Alexander ship , along beautiful cities such as Cologne , Koblenz , Mainz , Boppard and Düsseldorf .

Together with an enthusiastic team of volunteers and interns we were ready for our guests. Every day we helped them with ADL care , such as washing, dressing, going to the toilet, eating and drinking, and - if you are authorized and competent - also with handing or administering medication.

Care with time and attention

What I liked most about this trip is that there was no time pressure during the care moments . You really had the space to help your guest at his or her ease, with full attention. That gave not only the guests, but also myself the feeling of peace, care and vacation.

Learning moments on board

The week offered many opportunities to learn and gain practical experience. There were several nurses on board who could guide you , sign off tests and procedures . I learned a lot about nursing procedures , various medical conditions and how to best deal with different guests with different care needs.

Freedom, conviviality and togetherness

In addition to work, there was enough time to relax. In between the care moments, there was time for a chat with colleagues, laughing together and enjoying. When the ship docked, we could explore the towns with a number of guests and colleagues and do fun activities. After dinner, there was a fun program, such as a music evening, games evening or bingo .

In the evening I helped my guest to get ready for the night, after which I supported other volunteers if necessary. It was an intensive, but incredibly warm and valuable week.

An experience never to be forgotten

I look back with great pleasure on this educational and special journey. The atmosphere was warm and collegial, the guidance professional and involved, and the gratitude of the guests was heartwarming.

I enjoyed the journey, the contacts, the beautiful cities and the pleasant evenings. And I know for sure:
I will definitely join the Heinz Foundation more often in the future!

Yours sincerely,
