Interns Meike and Sophie about their educational journey on board the Prince Willem Alexander ship
During the river cruise with the Prince Willem Alexander ship from Saturday 6 to Saturday 13 April 2025, we were able to welcome two enthusiastic interns: Meike and Sophie . Both are following the nursing IG training at Drenthe College and experienced their first care internship on board an adapted holiday boat. In this special learning environment, they were given the opportunity to gain practical experience, work together with professionals and build a bond with our guests.
Below they share their personal experiences.
Meike Laarman – Drenthe College Meppel
"I am in the first year of my training and am doing an internship at a psychogeriatric department for people with dementia. There I help care recipients to maintain their own control. On the PWA ship it was different: you really consult with the holidaymakers themselves, you look together at what you can do for them.
During this week I saw many nursing procedures and sometimes even performed them independently, such as changing a stoma bag. I received guidance from experienced caregivers and help from fellow interns who are further along in their training.
What I also really liked was that we went through the day with the care coordinators every morning: what went well, what did we encounter, and what is on the schedule? Everything was discussed and that gave structure and confidence.
At first I was unsure: 'Can I do this?' But after a few days I loosened up. I dared to ask questions and got a lot in return. The team was always there. You didn't just learn from the work, but also from each other.
This internship week was super educational and fun for me. I gained a lot of confidence in myself and would definitely want to do it again. I recommend it to every intern!”
Sophie Booij – Drenthe College Assen
“My name is Sophie and I am following the nursing IG training in Assen. This was my first time with Stichting Heinz, and what a great experience it was!
I learned a lot on board the Prins Willem Alexander ship . I found learning in practice, under the supervision of nurses, particularly valuable. They gave me the space to perform actions and then took the time to evaluate together. I received clear tips and tops , which helped me to grow.
What I also found very special was the bond with the guests. You notice that it is more than just providing care – it is also being there for them, having a chat, laughing together.
This week was a SUPER educational and fun experience for me. If I get the chance to go again, I will say a wholehearted YES!”
Learning outside the walls of an institution
Meike and Sophie's stories show how valuable an internship at Stichting Heinz Bijzondere Vakantiereizen is. The combination of care, practical experience, personal attention and teamwork creates a learning environment that you won't find anywhere else.
We are proud of their commitment, growth and enthusiasm.
And of course we hope to see them again soon – as interns, or maybe even as volunteers! Also interested in an internship with us? Check out the possibilities on our website or contact us via info@stichtingheinzreizen.nl .
